drum brake wheels

#1 Post by Bil Brown »

I have a set of 4 1/2x15 drum-brake Lemmerz wheels that I just had the chrome stripped from. 3 are 9/64 and 1 is 3/65, and all are numbered "1555" on the center near the dates. All my other drum brake wheels are numbered "1585". Does this number refer to the chrome?...... or maybe the offset? These wheels are 5/8" deeper than stock wheels. The welds are identical to all the stock wheels I have. Anyone know anything about the Lemmerz/Porsche wheel numbering system? Any other "1555" wheels out there?

Bill,

I'll check mine as I have 4 ½ and 5" with more offset on the Turtle. I think they are dated 1964,.

I used to have an old 1966 Empi dealer`s catalog, and I remember them offering "German-made chrome reversed wheels for Porsche 356". I wonder if this is what they are??

I have a lem 4 1/2 ,12/62 1555, chrome
" " 4/58 1585, chrome
I think Dick Koenig did an article on wheel #'s several years ago, but that may have been on alu/steel only.

Bill:
YES, the 1555 wheeel has about 25MM negitive offset, the 1585, about 41MM. It would appear that the 1585 wheel is for use with 60MM brakes!

The EMPI wheel was Lemmerz, 5 1/2, marked #1576, offset 44,70 .

I'm not familar with Lemmerz # 1555.

I`d be interested to hear from Carrera2 owners whose cars have the original wheels. Do these Lemmerz "1555" wheels have anything to do with the big brakes? Please post your reply on the forum.......Bill Brown

"1555" Lemmerz wheels

#8 Post by Bil Brown »

I`m still trying to identify these wheels I have. Are there any C2 owners out there that have original wheels on their car? Did these wheels have anything to do with the annular disc brakes? Anyone else with 4 1/2"x15 Lemmerz wheels marked "1555" in the center near the date? In the pic, the "1555" is on the left, "1585" on the right.

Hi Bill,

I have 2) lemmerz 1/64 with 1555 but they were originally stamped 1585 and overstamped chrome with original grey paint on the centers.
4½X15.

I have 2) lemmerz 8/66 with 01872 marked "Made in western Germany" 5X15 chrome.

I have 2) lemmerz 12/59 with 1585 chrome.

Some more in the barn I haven't checked.

I can't draw any conclusion from this data, maybe you can.

Norm
