Engine storage

#1 Post by Mark Roth »

I am going to buy a spare engine which is in excellent condition. I won't be able to start it occasionally. Any suggestions on how to store it so that it keeps? Valve adjustments? Periodic rotation? Oils?

Engine storage

Airtight bag it with 10lbs silica gel desiccant - it'll be in the same condition when you take it out of the bag as the day you put it in.

Mark,

I stored an engine for 7 years in Oklahoma with no problems upon installation and startup by

1) Spraying some preservative oil down the carb throats while the motor was running and immediatly shuting it down
2) Installing clean oil in the case
3) Placing a small amount of power steering fluid in each cylinder and turning the motor over by hand several times and reinstall the plugs
4) place some cosmoline on the flywheel face
5) Cover the carb throats with plastic taped in place (keep bugs out)
6) Cover exhaust ports with duct tape (keep bugs out)

In Houston humidity may be an issue so the a large plastic bag with the 10 lbs dessicant mentioned in an earlier post is also a good idea, as is turning the engine over by hand every other month.
