Does anyone have a good photo of what is at the top of the 57 356a shocks?
where is the top section of the REAR shock attached to?
I went to pelicanparts.com under suspension and shock absorbers and there is a
picture the but nothng that shows what the top section of the shock is attached to?

Look at the thread "brake drum hubs " about 5 messages above yours and open the photo with the red speedster and the brake drum. It shows the shock (painted black ) with the location eye bolted into the suspension structure. The rear one has a thread at the top of the shock that goes through a hole in a formed welded on plate and is is secured with a washer and nut.

On the rear there is a steel ring that is part of the body
and is just aft of the axle. The front has a threaded hole
that is 12 mm on the outside and has an internal thread of
10 mm. The ring is about 2 inches in diameter and about 3/8
inch thick.
