E-brake cable parts question

#1 Post by David Campbell »

There are apparently two versions available - a cable produced by Genuine Porsche Classic and one produced by GEMO. I have used GEMO clutch and brake cables in my VW type I and found them to be satisfactory for that vehicle.

I plan to replace the emergency brake cables on our 61 T-5 this winter and just wondered if anyone heartily recommends spending 3X for the Porsche product.

Nothing is broken (at the moment) but I have no idea how old the set are on the car and my 356 guru told me it would be a good preventative measure. TIA

Just spit-balling but I would venture a guess that the Porsche cable is made by GEMO.

I would inspect the originals; no fraying or broken wires, you're good to go.

Even in rusty cars I have never (as far as I can remember) seen one that needed replacement because it was worn out. this is a messy job that does not need to be done. al zim

My '58 cab had "C" brakes on it when I bought it, but no E brake connections from the front of the tunnel to the brakes. As Al says, it is a messy, somewhat frustrating job
to do. If you can't see any problems after close inspection and you can get them adjusted properly, I would leave the cables alone.

I just reinstalled my original cables after cleaning and inspecting. Cleaned tubes and added grease in tubes. Cables just pushed most of grease out in messy pile at front of tubes. When installing clutch cable I just greased cable on its way in per Vics advise. No mess at other end.
