Flywheel Shim to Measure End Play

I dug these pieces out of a box of parts I bought. ID is 50mm. OD is 60mm. Each is .5mm thick. I am guessing they are VW shims? Can I use these to measure flywheel end play before I buy a new shim?

Our original flywheel and shim were lost in shipping. So unless these work, I’m left to buy a new shim just to check the end play.

Do they match the diameter of the #1 main bearing? 36 hp vw shims would, later ones will be too large diameter.

The ID appears to be the same. The OD of the bearing is larger.

Those should work then for measuring.

A slight correction of flywheel shims;

All shims--including the thick S90, have 49mm ID x 65mm OD, except the S90 which has its 70mm OD to suit its
larger flanged 2-piece main bearing.

Dick, that is confusing. Could you clarify it?

Seems clear enough.

It’s been a while, s 90 has both a thick shim and a thin one used together?

No; just one thick one. I have used a thick AND a thin on a S-90 when the correct thick one was not available. You have to be sure to install the thin one on the flywheel side!

Thanks. I was confused because Dick gave both diameters for the S 90 shim

He posted that all the shims were the same ID and that the S-90 had a larger OD.

When referring to a S-90 specific shim, is its use dictated by the case, crank, flywheel, or bearing?

We have a S-90 case, with 356C / 912 crank, 200 mm flywheel, and single-piece #1 main bearing.

Why?

Dick:

It might be a bit clearer if you said "All shims have 49mm ID x 65mm OD, except the S90 which has its 70mm OD to suit its

larger flanged 2-piece main bearing. "

Not being critical and I want you to know that I appreciate all of your substantial contributions and enjoy reading your posts!

Dennis; S-90 determined by crankshaft and bearing.
Bruce; the thin bearing has too small an OD to work with the S-90 bearing's larger flange.
