Silly?
OK, what’s the best way to remove an engine from the stand.. I want to put it on a dolly to roll it under the car on the lift.. Is it balanced if you use the hood behind the Shroud? Don’t want to scratch anything!!!

Re: Silly?
That hook would be way off balance. A rope in the pulley groove would give a good second spot to lift from.

Re: Silly?
Do you have an H or I-shaped based on your stand or two legs? So, this:
Or this:
If it's the latter, you could wheel a hydraulic cart under it and then remove it that way. I use my cart to R&R the engine from the car on my 2-post lift. But I have the first type of stand where the base interferes with positioning the cart, so I had to get creative. I stretch out the arms on my lift, put a thick piece of plywood on the pads, wheel the stand over and raise the lift until I can remove the engine from the stand. I pull the stand away, then lower the lift enough to slide it onto my raised hydraulic cart. I don't have a hoist so this works for me.

Re: Silly?
The weird thing about 356 engines is that they get heavier every year!
What I did was go to Harbor Freight and bought a $45 Electric Hoist (Don't forget your Coupon and your Free gift) and a pipe from hope depot. I strapped the pipe to the trusses in may garage and hung the hoist from the pipe. I use the hoist to lift and lower the engine as needed. I prefer to use the lift hook (if still in place). Yes it is way out of balance, but with the hoist you have tremendous control and can easily level the engine out by hand as you lower to the dolly. On the engines that don't have the hook, I use two straps (I bought at Harbor Freight / Don't forget your Coupon and your Free gift) and I loop them under the heads or J pipes (depending what amount of heater stuff is still on the engine). Usually you can lift perfectly level that way. Again, the hoist makes life a lot easier. No fuss no muss no damage no injury.
Oh to R&R the engine, I use a motorcycle jack. Works great and fits 356 engines perfectly.

Re: Silly?
Sean's way also eliminates heavy lifting. Here's what I use: the engine stand is the H-legged type. The jack is the aluminum motorcycle jack from Harbor Freight with 1 foot extensions I had made up. The jack pads fit under the heads and is stable. Attach the engine stand yoke, roll it between the engine stand legs and raise it up and into the hole in the stand. When removing the engine, the car is on a lift raising the car to a workable height.
If you've watched some of the cR shows like Wheeler Dealers, Ant uses a cart like Sean describes.

Re: Silly?
I am lucky enough to have a pneumatic table lift as well as a smaller hydraulic motorcycle lift like Glen's. I use the table to lift the engine off the stand right on top of the hydraulic motorcycle lift that is on the table lift. Then I just lower the entire assembly enough to put it under the car. Oh yes, my car lift helps as well. Before I had all this, I would use an engine hoist with straps to lift it off of the stand and it would go on top of a floor jack. After jacking the car way up, i would just slide the engine in and start bolting it up. OK, that was a while ago when all I had was a wife, a porsche and mostly high expectations for a future yet to come. Fun!

Re: Silly?
The scissor style transmission jacks work great and are very stable. Call a friend or two and get them to help you lower the engine onto one. Our engines are not that heavy, so don't overthink it.

Re: Silly?
Very cool everybody!!!
I have a lift, so I was thinking the same think about extending the pads and a board..
I also have a tractor with forks on the loader bucket might work the easiest, just scoop it up on a pallet..

Re: Silly?
If you have the bracket behind the shroud, it will work of you're careful. Fully loaded, the engine will lean quite a bit but you can guide it by hand. Whether your engine hoist will clear your stand is a different question. The best way is to ask a couple of neighbors to help, less engineering is needed. Maybe just some refreshments.

Re: Silly?
Since the CG of the engine is under the fan shroud, and Carrera engines are heavier, I use two 1/8" steel cable loops, one around the crank pulley and the other around an engine mounting bolt, or the engine stand adapter. The loops run straight up to Carabiners in holes in a horizontal 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 12" steel bar. I lift the bar with a shackle through one of the holes in the middle with a come-a-long, and lower to the dolly. Sounds complicated, but it is all hardware store stuff, and it takes little storage space.
And it avoids the "carying a couch through the living room syndrome"

Re: Silly?
Hi Mike, So it is OK the lift from the heads? The outer edge where the rockers are, wouldn't want to crush the tubes..
If I put pads on my tractor forks this would make a easy spot to lift from, just wasn't sure putting weight there is a good idea..
Bill
Thanks,
Bill

The heads will be fine as long as you don’t crush the tubes or any sheet metal.

Martin is correct. I haven't had a problem with the pads on the heads.
