Black leather seats, looking for original swatch

#1 Post by Joris Koning »

All,

I am hoping to locate a small swatch of original black leather as used on our cars. Something from a C car would be best. I think I have located a supplier who can duplicate the original style Roser leather but they require a swatch from me to do so.

TIA,

Joris

Joris

Have you looked at Spinney Beck https://www.spinneybeck.com/

I redid my 912 a couple years ago. I bought the hides from them. I was very pleased with the leather

The leather I bought from Spinneybeck was nothing like the leather seats in my then 5 year old C coupe or my 1967 911S original leather. Back then the Germans used a very sturdy grain that was quite coarse compared to say RR leather which was soft and fine grain. Spinneybeck and all the modern leather seems to be the fine grain type.

CJ and others that may be interested, my local upholstery guy showed me a trick that will cover up the wear spots shown in the captured picture of CJ's seat below.
He rubs a black liquid shoe polish over the area and after it sets up you can use your regular leather treatment.

Hi John,

Thanks for the pointer. Someone told me that Spinney does not offer the real Roser type leater e.g. vegetable tanned and surface dyed with no patterning. This is the material I am after. I believe I have found a place locally who can help but need a sample.

@CJ, very interesting, I will be contacting you offline for some better shots. Thanks for posting

Regarding upholstery tricks, I would double-check on what to touch up any worn spots on a seat. You do not want to use a product that may not be permanent.

My upholstery guy recommended a spray product by SEM for interior touchups on my '69, and it worked very well. They have a range of colors. Although I did not spray it on my black leather seats, the Landau Black tint matched them. Not sure if that would work on leather,as the seats did not need anything, but worth a conversation at your local auto paint jobber. Good product.

You are looking for part number 000.551.700.00 for black non perforated leather. I am nor sure I would trust the 50 year old sample I have in my parts book. The book shows that this leather was used through the 911/912 B series car.

I don't know how bad your seat are but there is a lot that you can do to restore them to decent shape ,I think the old leather in a old car go together.
