So I helped a long time VW guy find his 1st 356 last year. A very solid 63 B with a C engine. He just sent me this picture. He found the chassis number stamped on the drivers side floor while stripping the floor for new undercoating. I have never heard of such a thing. Anyone else ever seen this?

Are the digits mirror image? At least the 1 looks backward.

They were stamped from the inside. I checked with Bruce Baker and he had never seen it. He thinks it was an apprentice practicing as the stamping are as he put it "ugly" #124136 Car was brought up to Michigan from Missouri when owner either divorced and/or retired. Originally sold in Copenhagen

do the numbers look identical in shape and script to the one stamped into the leading edge of the front trunk? If not, maybe someone stamped the number themselves in case the car was stolen. We just got in a 64 coupe that had all of the glasses etched with the vehicle id numbers. Quite a straight original car, but I guess the owner was afraid of someone stealing it!

I checked with the owner. Font is same as "hidden number" on passengers side under the door hinge cover
