Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Not sure how to explain the problem, but here goes:
I have a 64' SC with Webbers. When ever I start off in gear (pressing the accelerator it sounds like a crap game going off in the car. It's a jingling noise, or like a bell on a bicycle continually. When I'm at a light, I don't hear it....or at an idle. I pulled the hubcaps to check them...emblem is tight, no rattle from the wheels that I can tell. Engine all looks tight, nothing loose. Must be internal is my guess? What would cause that??
Anyone have a similar issue??
Thank you,
Glenn Burgess

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Have you tried holding your shifter? They can have a metallic rattle at certain rpm when the linkage bushings are worn.

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
I have no idea but try with the belt off for a few minutes.

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
I'm beginning to think that Norm hit it on the head!!
Makes sense to check the belt Martin, thank you. Thank you C.J., I'll check the shifter.
First the Shifter...then remove the belt! Yeah, I know....I'm a quick learner...
Thanks guys,
Glenn

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Unlikely to be detonation as that usually occurs when under load like trying to accelerate in 4th gear at lower rpm. The engine is lightly loaded in 1st gear even under hard acceleration compared to 4th at say 2500 rpm.
Shifter bushings would be my first choice.

If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

If you haven't renewed the shifting bushing and such you most likely need it that may be your problem, a good percentage of the owners drive not realising the shifting is not right. they feel that is the way old porsche shift!! wrong.

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
I agree with Martin. Take fan belt off. When the pulley halfs or hub start to wear you can get a jingling noise. While you have them off look for a groove in the hub. If you have one replace it as it will lead to cracking the pulley's. Then look at the pulley's to make sure they are not overly worn or cracked. (Alway's carry spare pulley halfs on trips.)

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Mine did the same, I think it was the bell crank that is attached to the transmission, it was always loose, and jingled away.. I just got used to it..

No loose tools in the engine bay or behind the fan shroud?

Could it be something loose in the exhaust ?

Was thinking the same as Martin above. If your exhaust is stock could the ends of the"S" pipes be hitting the cones in the bumperetts?

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Jim,
The bell crank on the transmission should have bushings in each end ...this will eliminate any slop and greatly improve throttle efficiency.

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Ok....UPDATE
First and foremost, thank you all for your help. I'm not that mechanically astute, so anything really technical I'll need to get it to a shop and on a lift.
The jingle is actually a whistle....my wife noticed it when was I driving up and down the street. It starts at 2000 RPM through 2500 RPM...then decreases to a small whistle that sounds like....yep, a low jingle.
I checked the fan belt Glen - it's new actually and tight, Cirque Du Soleiled myself behind the fan shroud...did find a couple of small washers I was missing, no tools Mike, jacked up the back-end to check the exhaust - nothing loose , Pulled belt off checked it and the pulleys - no wear. I'm not that mechanical to check for Detonation, but wouldn't it occur at any RPM? That was actually my original thought after Norm suggested it.
What do you guys think it is??
Glenn

Re: Jingling in gear with accelerator pressed
Still good to try it with the belt off in case it is generator noise or somehow related to the fan or air from it.
