if coasting in neutral and you hear a bearing noise it is probably the rear wheel bearings, move the wheel one side to the other and if the noise changes it is definitely the wheel bearings

George, how would moving the wheel one side to the other have any effect on a bad rear wheel bearing?
Bad bearings tend to growl or rumble, as opposed to the high-pitch sound of gear whine. Rear wheel bearings also revolve at lower speeds than transmission bearings.

He meant turning the steering wheel back and forth to alter the side loading on the wheel bearings.
