we always use it when trying to start an engine that had been sitting for awhile. Remove the plugs put a generous amount in, let sit overnight, then turn over by hand, let sit another night, then proceed to do what is necessary to start (changing the crankcase oil first!)

A lot of people swear by ATF for most of these uses. For either one there is seldom any proof that not using it would have been any different. I can be superstitious myself, in spite of generally relying on science.

50/50 ATF and acetone for penetration oil for nuts and bolts is super. Marvel for dry or rusty piston rings. I believe the little bit of wintergreen oil in the marvel attacks the iron oxides faster than the petroleums do.
