Looks like jewelry to me. I can’t wait.

Very nice looking build! Tell me more about the oil thermostat side cover. Is it for a bypass filter? my 1958 1600N has the oil thermostat 3rd piece but it has been totally gutted without the piston inside and has the stock cover. I would like to learn more about possible modifications to it.

From my builder:

“ The simple answer is “elbow grease”. A lot of degreasing and hand work with fine steel wool.”

Don Gale -

It’s a full flow oil system filter adapter that my builder had custom made. Photo of how it works:

Is that on a small pump engine in the thermostat housing?

Very clean setup, is that -8 or -10 oil line? Very rare to see these oil thermostat motors let alone one like this with a neat full flow adapter.

Will the oil filter be located inside or outside the engine compartment? Fron the length of the lines, it looks like inside. Very clean set up!

Oil lines are -8 and the filter console is mounted in the left rear wheel well.

The space where the thermostat used to exist has been taken up by the full flow adapter in such a way as there is no significant void to have to fill up prior to suppling the bearings with oil at start up.

Incidentally this is going into a 1958 1600 Super Speedster. The car itself is almost finished and looks as nice as this motor. I bought the car in 2007 and it was really nice. The project started with me wanting to return it to its original color not the 1956 metallic they had painted it in...slippery slope!

Thanks for the info, Richard. I am going to have the John Willhoit remote oil filter installed which is similar. I also want to have a metal "cage" installed fabricated from stainless steel expanded metal to protect the filter in the fender well.

Martin asked if you are working on a "small" oil pump engine. In one of the photos you can see the oil pump cover which indicates are small pump. But the fact that the timing cover has provision for the infamous thermostatic valve (Harry called it, the TOCV) it would have to have the small oil pump. BELOW is an illustration of the TOCV timing cover.

From my research, (1) timing covers with the valve started in Sept 1957, (2) then the actual valve was eliminated and a cover put over the hole in Oct 1958 and (3) then the casting was changed and the hole was gone in Feb 1959.

BTW the Small vs Large pump question comes up fairly often by customers -- they don't know what they have. So BELOW is a quick reference in an illustration of the three "late" pump covers (minus the earlier removable pump assembly). BTW the early pump gear is 24 mm vs late 36 mm long.
