Can someone please provide a photograph of a nose cone for a 716 transmission. What is the nose cone's part number? Thanks.

Looks just like a 644, but has a seal inside.

Thanks Vic. Is it the same nose cone just with the added seal?

The front cover with an oil seal, that was used on 716 transmissions, was introduced in Nov 58 as a 644 part, as of 644 transmission number 22996.
From the outside, it looks the same as the previous 644 front cover, and has the same part number and casting number.

Some photos of a 644 nose cone, 716 nose cone and a 644 modified by Mike Robbins. The 716 sealed nose cone was a one year only item, so I thought it would be good to include some pictures in this thread.....I have looked into an external modification using a 924/944 shift selector seal. It seems most 644 shift selectors are too rusty or scratched to make it worthwhile to bother......

The 716 front cover in Eric's photos is from a different casting supplier to Porsche, which is why the number and logo look different than the others.
But the numbers are all the same, 644.20.114.

Here are two that I have on hand, and a photocopy of the factory bulletin announcing the change...

One drawback to the seal being inside; the shift finger can get dry and start to bind over time. I had two gearboxes in here last year that had that problem.

Can the VW outer repair bushing/seal be adapted to the various Porsche cones?

Yes, the earlier 356 covers can be modified to accept one, but the VW seal carriers currently available have quality issues.
