What is needed to use led tail lights with a 356a 6 volt system.

If you use the CuLayer system they are "plug and play". Great product!

+1 on CU Layer. I haven't tried cheap, generic individual LED bulbs on my 356 but they work poorly on other cars I have tried.

+1 for CuLayer's solution. It is awesome and a great safety improvement.

toss some LEDs in your gauges while you are updating

Jeffry Fellman's SMD tail/brake/directional lights and front marker/blinkers are also plug and play. Remove filament bulb, plug in SMD "bulb". No fiddling around. BRIGHT! Much brighter than cu layer IMHO.

Reasonably priced and nice and bright. The requisite electronic flasher brings the flash rate up to date.

I would go with the color leds that are the same as the lenses - red for tail lights, yellow for turn signals (or white as the case may be). The leds are so bright the white ones tend to wash out the color. Superbright site recommendation.
There are some on amazon. Put in “6v led bulb red (or yellow)” in the search. 2 for $15 or less. Just found them right now. Get an electronic flasher and you’re in business. No need to spend more.

I've used the CU Layer LED tail lights and they work fine. But on my last car it was a Euro delivery with the yellow/red lens. The problem was that the brake lights and the turn signals were in the yellow section and not too keen on yellow brake lights so I bought red LED bulbs off Amazon to put under the yellow portion. Worked great - really bright red brake lights and turn signals. I also put a set of clear LED's in the front turn signals I think they all cost about $10 per pair, delivered. I did buy the Hella electronic turn signal flasher which was great with good solid flashes.

As mentioned previously, you’ll need an electronic flasher and make sure you have good grounds.

Just last week I installed a set of CU's on my roadster (6 volt) with Euro lenses. I previous had LED bulbs; I think from Sierra M.
Though the the LED's were an improvement over the stock bulbs, they are no way as bright as the CU's: I could say the prior were brighter, but the CU's are brilliant.
The cost is significantly more, but the results are so well worth it. I highly recommend them over the LED bulbs. Jules: The gauge lights are next!

I LOVE my CU Layer tail light setup. They are GREAT and the seller is a great guy. I live not too far from him and he gave me the set personally. I had a good talk with him. Out of curiosity I would love to see the European stuff.
