Engine Differences between 1600 S and Super 90

#1 Post by Ken Tuvman »

Okay, I'm pretty new here.

In the process of overhauling a 356B 1600 Super engine. My engine builder's been working with Leonard with Shasta Design and we'll be installing his cylinders & pistons and camshaft / followers in the rebuild. New valves, springs, guides . . .

Here's my question: the seller told me the car had been raced at some point in it's history - the hood had a hole for quick refueling and a race-cap that was subsequently hammer welded into the solid piece the hood once was. When we disassembled the motor it was interesting that the cylinders were nicasil and (1) of the pistons had a different stamping on it. A member of another Porsche forum stated my pistons were from a Super 90 motor, which may have been more suited for racing. The valves are also pretty big - 40mm intake and 34mm exhaust - were those stock valves in a Super 90?

In summation > what were the differences in parts and HP between the 1600 Super and Super 90 engine?

Any info appreciated. Thanks much > Ken

NOTE:

75 & 90 horsepowers are DIN; SAE would be 88 and 102.
