Type 64, Porsche or not a Porsche?

#1 Post by Adam Wright »

Looks like word has come down from on high, it's not a Porsche.

"We would like to be very clear, it's not the first Porsche," Frank Jung, head of the historical archives for Porsche, told CNBC. He said the world's first Porsche, from 1948, is sitting on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

So by adding "PORSCHE" to the front of the Type 64 just added or more precisely, started the confusion. Why did they badge it in the first place? It will be interesting to see where this one ends up both in selling price (or reserve not met) and who bids/buys it. You'd think Porsche would be a bidder but they say no.

Very perplexing. Wish factory would buy and display. Would be nice for people to see its technical prowess. Instead of locked up in a collection in Timbuktu .....

I agree George....very puzzling. I`d sure like to know what the beef is about acquiring this car, they`ve turned it down before. Anyone know the back story?

From what I can gather Porsche isn't big on buying cars, much of the collection was donated. I know King Hussein's 904 was given as part of a trade with the Factory.

No, but I think that was bought by member's of the Porsche family, and on loan to the museum.

The auctioneer started the bidding at 30 million and it quickly rose to 70 million, how the hell did it get back into the mid-teen millions ??

He clearly to me said 30 then 40 then 50. Did anyone hear teens ?

Going once, going twice (3 times) ? Does that happen very often ?

Apparently, the RM theatrics didn't play well with the crowd with actual bidding stalling at $17,000, which apparently didn't work for the seller.

I'm finally putting in my opinion on this car. It is Porsche design #64. It is a Volkswagen KDF chassis with a special body. Known for decades as a VW 60K10; Type 60 with special Karrossserrie (sp?) Number 10. Porsche did build it. They also built many of the prototype VW KDF Wagens; that does not make them Porsches.

Technically it's not a Porsche. Realistically it is.
