I had this type of thought numerous times, until a friend enlightened me. In the 80's he had passed on one of the five 1963 Corvette Grand Sport for something like 30k. They are 6-8 mil now. No matter he says. I would have sold at 60k and thought at the time I was a genius.

That’s an awfully strong price to not have met the bid. It’s tricky to buy these without really knowing the rebuild history especially if they just sat. Surprising offer wasn’t accepted, if it was a real offer.

And this is why I rarely trade in 4-cam stuff. Yes, the engine in question is probably worth $250,000 but you need a bunch of factors to realize that.
1. You need a guy who wants the motor
2. You need a guy who can afford the motor.
3. You need a guy who will actually open his wallet.

Finding those three guys at the same time is tough. The pool for potential buyers for this stuff is very very small. Give me a nice 400mm wheel any day, guys line up to buy that.

My other problem with buying 4-cam stuff is it's like buying a Speedster in the last 5 years, you are almost guaranteed the guy selling it is over-valuing it.

A few years ago I sold my 47 years owned 59 Carrera GT after trying to find it's original for many years.
I knew it had been cannibalized and couldn't locate it.
I eventually acquired a 59 RSK engine with a nice history but it wasn't the same as "original" so I tried to
and offered to sell it to the current RSK owner, but no deal.
The person who bought it was lucky enough to locate the engine however not able to acquire it.

These scenarios are hard and disappointing and seem to occur often.
With tongue in cheek, there should be a law remanding their reunion.

I hope I someday can forget the whole thing. and move on!

Been there. Was luckily able to reunite the engine out of my '57 but it was a long journey. The engine out of my '56 now sits in a GT speedster the european collectibles had for sale some time back. I e-mailed them about it but never got a reply.

On a funny note, the engine first installed in my '59 cab was taken out by the factory before the car was delivered. I have the kardex matching number engine with the car. Some years back I helped a friend buy a 692 engine. When Steve's book got published I found that my cab had another engine associated with it. The number seemed familiar. You guessed it, its the engine I helped my friend get. He feels it should be with my car and has promised it to me. So one day I will have both "matching engines" with my car
