being rebuilt and reupholstered and what's under the rubber floor mats smells pretty rancid. I'm looking at purchasing this Jute material from World Upholstery and wondering if any of you have used something like this. Would using a scraper be the best way to remove the old horsehair that was used as a lavatory by the mice?

Thanks much

Floor covering sound deadening would have been tar paper type material.

The good stuff is probably now available from Bill Perrone at The Parts Shop. However, others have used Dynamat or a similar material as it is covered by the rubber floor mats.

I also have a 1961 356B. And owned quite a few other 356 cars. I never noticed any difference between the noise level in a car that had sound deadening in the floor or when it was removed. The 540 series of cars never had sound deadening. I have judiciously removed my sound deadening and cleaned the floors. Then repainting them with spray can enamel. Dirt is easily vacuumed from the floor and if the inside gets wet it can be easily dried. If you use a premium tire the noise will decrease because these tires are usually round. Have a qualified shop set the Road Force on the tires that will also substantially quiet the car. al zim

Thanks Al and Jim - seats are out being reupholstered and I plan to scrape the OEM lining from the floors (it not for the mouse infestation I'd not touch it but is smells awful).
Planning to use 1/4" jute to glue to floorboard which will be covered with rubber mats. Noise level isn't a consideration as expecting car to be noisy anyway - I'm used to wearing foam earplugs on my BMW motorcycles and if noise is a problem, will use them. Just want to get the cabin clean and vermin smell free!

Tires are new Vredesteins but no experience driving the car as engine is being overhauled - did drive it in the parking lot at the shop and was happy transmission and clutch feel very good.

ROAD FORCE: Tires are not round. It has been my experience that the CHEAPER the tire the less quality controls are present and the tire is less round. Wheels are the same. The best example I can give you is that the 5.5 inch wide chrome 356A/B wheels made in China and Brazil are probably not round and sometimes the center section which houses the lug bolts is not centered. We have a huge shipping box full of these that need to go to the dune buggy people. Given that you have a wheel that is off center and a tire that is off center and you mount the tire. When you put it on a Hunter wheel balancer, it will show that the tire is bumping down the road. In Texas that seems to be most common on pick up trucks that are jacked up with HUGE tires. The tire balancer will also show the high spot on the tire and the low spot on the rim. Mark the tire and the rim. You break the beads on the tire on your tire changer and rotate the tire so the high and low spots are together then check the balance. If it is withing specifications the car will ride down the road smoothly and the sound the tires will make is a swooshing sound. Some tire shops will charge as much as $35.00 for this service. It is part of the balancing we only charge if we have to rotate the tire on the rim. al zim
