I have the engine out of my car and was wiping down the bellhousing in the area of the starter when suddenly a broken fiber washer appeared in my rag. I assume it came from the starter but can't really find it in diagrams. It measures 2 1/4" outside diameter, 1 1/2" inside. I contacted Joe Leoni and he didn't think it came from the starter, maybe the throw out bearing. It does not seem to fit anything I can see on the starter (which I have not removed at this point and it has been working fine) or the throw out bearing area.
Anybody have any ideas?

Re: 6 Volt Starter question
I recall there being a large diameter fiber washer (with the dimensions you list) that serves to block entry of dust and dirt into the open end of the starter.
I guess it is on the shaft behind the over-running (sprag) clutch. As I recall when the sprag clutch and pinion gear are retracted the end of the starter is closed up.
