Rubber and trim for glass
Hi All
After our 356 Coupe went for repair after the deer accident, we have decided to spray the whole car. All the glass (Front & Rear Screens & the Rear Hinged Side Glass)
We need to replace all the Rubber and trim to refit. I'm a little confused as to what parts to order. The front trim is listed as L/H & R/H. Is that correct and is it the same (L/H , R/H) on the Rear Screen? Not sure what rubber goes in the body frame. Also, is the rubber frame seal for the side rear hinged window, one piece?
I never removed all this, so there are no clues. The body (1961 356 T5B Coupe) is going for soda blasting/ bare metal, and just want all the correct window rubbers and trims ready for re install after the Paint. Any help much appreciated.
Kind regards Jay

Re: Rubber and trim for glass
The aluminum trim is different for front and rear, left and right. The quarter window seal on the body is one piece. You'll need to cut slits for the hinges. The windshield rubber is either Reutter or Karmann depending upon your car. I prefer the seam of the rubber to be on the bottom. The aluminum trim and rubber is installed on the glass before installing it on the car.

Re. the trim, both the front and the rear pieces. They will be longer than required and will need to be trimmed to fit. Make sure that both sides are trimmed an equal amount to keep the joint in the center rather than offset.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Will you be installing the windows yourself? (vs. having the shop do it). Use glycerin as a lube and avoid using concentrated thumb pressure coercing the new seal in. String method works well, I think there is a clip showing the install in "Made By Hand".

Don
The body shop will install the glass, they removed all the glass, so I haven't a clue what parts I need to order to reinstall.
Anyone?
Regards Jay

Glass, rubber seal, aluminum trim and trim connectors. All pre-assembled prior to installing the glass on the car.

I hope you got that deer's insurance info. He's costing you a bit of scratch. On the bright side you will have new paint and seals.

Re: Rubber and trim for glass
Jay I feel for you, I actually missed my deer but the car did not miss the culvert under a driveway a foot off the road when I twitched the wheel. Two years short of a month later and my car is ready to come back to me. Cost to repair was half of the cars insured value. I am thankful that I have my insurance with Hagerty as they have covered almost 100% of the cost to bring the car back to where it was before the wreck. Be prepared for the long haul unless your body shop is hungry for money and is not backed up like all the decent body shops here in the US. I hear that 2 years is about average for most good body shops that are capable of repairing Porsches and other valuable classics. Of course in my case it was made more difficult as the shop had to have a Celette bench to pull the car back to correct dimensions.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: Rubber and trim for glass
Thanks Mike
Parts ordered.
David, Thanks for your kind words. The total cost of repair is scary to me, but my body guy is well in to this job. The car is still waiting to go for a full bare metal 'Soda Blast'
Not sure what more work they are going to uncover on the other side of the car. I just see mucho dinero! The time frame is just 2 months at the moment, will report back when its back from blasting.
Cheers Jay
