The correct situation is to contact North Hollywood Speedometer and find out what sending you should use. Install it and that should rectify your temp issue. al

No, Greg;

I think not for a 356. Threads look different, the temp range(?) isn't correct, and the tube is too short for exposure to the oil. It's measurement should be checked w/a meter--there's a different temp. range to
match the early or late existing gage.

I think that is a hi temp switch not a thermometer gauge sender. I cannot quite make out the VDO part # but if you can, go and Google it and VDO should tell you.

Just a follow up here. I called North Hollywood and they sent me a temp sensor that will work with my temp gauge. I had a little oil leak somewhere in the vicinity of the temp sensor or pressure sensor so, I took the assembly apart, cleaned up the parts and reassembled using Permatex #2. Here is the question, when I screw in the pressure sensor, it doesn't screw all the way down. Almost but, not all the way. Is this okay? Think it's probably bottoming out on the threaded rod that screws into the block. Thoughts?

It has a tapered thread. Like a water pipe. al

Thanks Al. I should be good then.

Okay, sports fans. Here's the update. I called North Hollywood and they sent me a new temp sender that should match up to the rebuild of the temp gauge which they did. I fired up the engine and let it idle for about 15 minutes but the temp gauge never really moved. When I turned on the engine, the needle came up a tiny bit, maybe 3/8" but then just stayed there. I went to the back of the car when the ignition was off and measured the resistance between the temp sensor an a ground and it was at 28 ohms. I disconnected the wire to the temp sensor and grounded it. With the ignition switch turned on, the needle went all the way to the right...took it about 2 seconds to make it to redline. What do I do next in this little saga?

Drive the car. You won't warm up much just sitting there idling

I just did. Stuck a thermometer into where the dip stick goes and she reads about 170 degrees. The gauge is still showing just a little over 100 degrees.

Greg, you are not going to fix this issue quickly without the correct diagnosis and as I said in an earlier post a decade box will quickly prove what is at fault. Simulate the sensor and decide what resistance range you want. Tell NA what it is and they can sell you one of the correct range. It is definitely not rocket science.

Okay, David, broke down and ordered a decade box. Should be here in a few days.

Okay, got the decade box in the mail today. Directions are in Chinese. Not one word of English. Looked up how to use a decade box on the internet and found that most guys are more enamored with showing their electronic genius instead of simple, hook up this to that ...turn knobs...So far, waste of time and money and my temp gauge still doesn't work.

Greg, hook up the decade box with the wire that goes to the temp sender on one terminal and the other terminal to ground. Turn on the ignition but remove the hot wire from the coil so you do not overheat it. Now set the resistance at about 30 ohms and then increase the resistance settings incrementally by about 10 ohms at a time and watch the temp gauge as it rises. You can now figure out what resistance range sender you need.
This may help as well.

Greg,
I have a temp sender you can install. Known working condition from a car I once owned. It should give you an accurate reading.

... if it matches up to his gauge resistance-wise.....
