Homeless in So Cal

#1 Post by Martin Bruechle »

Story by Angus.

Hello,
I just had to share this with you folks here on the Porsche fourm.
These are pictures that I took in Ventura Ca. when down there in January.
I had seen this car there previous times, but this time I stopped and asked some questions.
The owner and son are homeless(various reasons) and have been camping out of/sleeping in this car behind a gas station in the public parking area for some time now. Unlike the folks in the background of the picture(motor homes), they would rather live in his fathers car than sell it, and better their current position. Go figure......
I must say, the man had his principles. I asked if he would like to sell it after some talking and all, on various occasions . But the answer was a absolute "no" with a shake of the head... I guess that's being homeless in the "California Style".... "Everyone, has a dream".

I've seen this kind of thing many times. The old, "if you sold this car, or cars, you could have running water, a roof, a working toilet even!" Nope, nope, nopeity, nope, not for sale. Or even guys working jobs that they hate but they could sell a valuable car and retire, nope again. Never understood it.

I get it. It is theirs and they are bonded to it. It's home. Hopefully it doesn't get impounded and they lose it.

He is still around in Ventura, my son sent me these photos today of the car and it runs.
I would love to find out the story on this.
The next time I see him I’ll have to talk to him.

Most 356s end up in a home seldom driven, this one ended up as a well driven home.

Alternative housing for Unabomber types.

He had a big beautiful house in Malibu until he made the down payment on a proper 356 restoration!

I can’t help but wonder about the back story here. Was the car passed down through his family for example. Was it the one thing he struggled to keep in a divorce. Maybe both of the above. I hope there is a future for them that involves a better/safer place for them to sleep and the opportunity for them to keep this 356 that means so much to them. Perseverance if I’ve ever seen it. Wishing them the best.
