I am building my 1959 to be a hotrod.

I have seen some cars using a strip of aluminum trim for the front and rear bumper.

Any idea what they are using?

Yep Bob Kann has the best version, I got some from him and he actually had them made with the correct profile from an original set. He has two lengths, 7ft and 8ft gtwerk.com

You'll have to anneal it to get it to bend but be careful with the heat, it's aluminum. The ends are shaved down to have a smooth transition to the part the bends and wraps around the backside of the bumper. You can bend around the bumper without that detail but that's the cleanest way I've seen done.

A trick to annealing aluminum: Coat it with soot from a "dirty" oxy-acetylene flame. Then use a normal flame at a distance and heat it from the opposite side. The soot will burn off when it hits the magic 650F +/- temperature, way below the 1200F melting point. Let it air cool to room temp and it will bend without cracking. The annealed portion will remain soft unless solution heat-treated if 6061-T6.

I believe the factory used two ways to finish the Al bumper trim ends. For A cars, they wrapped the trim around the end of the bumper, while for B cars the trim was finished with rounded ends much like the rocker deco. We used the rounded method for my ‘61. Bob Kahn had instructions to finish the ends in either style.

There is probably a thread or two that describes the process, including annealing, in the archives.

what are peoples thoughts on basket handle on hood of my 59? Keep it or chuck it? Mild hot rod build.
