Early Fuel Pump Reassembly

#1 Post by Dennis Vogel »

I took on the satisfying task of rebuilding my early fuel pump today. It was mostly successful, but left me with a few questions:
  1. Is the cap gasket dry fit?

  2. I have two gaskets left over from the rebuild kit with no obvious home. In theory they could go on the side screws or the top cap bolt? Where do they go?

  3. Is the patterned side (left) the "red coated face" mentioned in the workshop manual that contacts the valve seat (i.e. not the spring side)

I'm sure these are dumb questions, but I've been through the Bruce Smith articles, parts catalog, and workshop manual and couldn't find a definitive answer. I find a lot of late model fuel pump information. I found one exploded view of an early fuel pump in the printed parts catalog. Couldn't come up with a cut-away view or more detailed reassembly for the early fuel pumps that could help answer these. Thanks.

Cover seal is installed dry.
Seals are for side plug and top cover bolt.
Rough side of valve phenolic piece goes against tiny spring
