1959 front bumper fitment?

#1 Post by tom collingwood »

I am installing a restoration design front bumper on my 1959A.

should the gap on the bumper to the body be the same throughout the top?
I t currently comes in closer to the nose.

I taped the area that i could cut the bumper to keep it consistant gap all the way through.

What is original and what is common practice?

i am building somewhat of a hotrod.
using restoration design bumpers.

we brought the bumpers in close the the body and brought ends in even closer for a streamline look.

would it be too tight? Should i have uniform gap all the way around? thoughts?

cool I like the fit, nice job! i'm wanting to do something similar with mine. my stock bumpers are good but not perfect i'm thinking about cutting them and tucking them in like you did.

i have moved forward onto my 55 speedster bumper gaps now.
Is there any publication with the actual measurements?

Tom,

Adjusting the bumpers that close to the body skin makes it difficult to clean the gap; I'd rather have
finger clearance (and a rag/towel) for ease of cleaning.

Also having them that close raises the bar on what is an acceptable fit. I don’t think trimming the center is so good, I’d make a number of cuts in the bumper and weld it back together with its contour matching the body. A lot of work, but worth it if that’s what you want.

When new the bumper did not follow the nose contour.
See Ron's picture above. Correct.

i kept my 59 coupe bumpers tight front and rear. It is a hot rod build. So we wanted small clean gaps and lines.

my 55 speedster will be correct however. That is the one i want concours gaps.
