Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
Guys,
Here's a little update on my search:
Including my Speedster, we have identified four chassis numbers of L&S race cars.
Thanks to all of you that have helped or are still helping me track down this history.
The research continues...more later...
To those who have given me these chassis numbers, is it alright with you to list them here?

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
I own the old 1958 VW bus walkthrough standard that was in his back yard since the mid 70's until 2002 when we bought it .... It is my favorite car, super rare with tons of history. That was a great shop run by the best of the best...

Drew,
How about a photo? Got any photos from back in the day?
Was this the shop van?

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
It wasn't the shop van, just an old bus that sat in the middle of all the Porsches for a few decades Bill Shormans sister used it for storage, and and it took many years to buy because of that. I loved that shop. Bill gave me his Maestro book...he seemed happy to see a young guy interested in 356's. I think I was in my late 20's at the time. Here is the bus now:

Ran across these photos of two 356 Tech Sessions from the past. Color photo was at Tom Martenot's shop with Marsha Wilson showing tune up parts. B&W photo is at Lukes and Shoreman, with Tom Manning (Big Bird) discussing what was their standard

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
I believe this photo is form the Lukes and Shorman shop circa early 60's. The Pooper looks like it is the same one pictured earlier. There are at least 4 Poopers around today but I am not sure if this one of them. Does anyone have further information?

Greg
Nice photo.
Does anyone have other photos of the L&S shop?
They would be great to see and might have a view or two of the race cars I’m researching.
In Greg’s photo you can see the number 11 car. Very good.

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
As a follow up to Greg's photo, here's another photo of Number 11 taking a victory lap at what appears to be Laguna Seca.
I assume the man holding the checkered flag is Harry Shorman. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Is the driver Walt Benson?
How about the other fellow? Bill Shorman perhaps?
We think we know the chassis number, the current owner and the location of this car now.

Steve, Do you know the year of the L&S tech session photo? I see a few familiar faces including myself! Don't remember the event but apparently I was there.

I'd say other fellow is likely Bill with his traditional 60's flat top haircut!

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
IN THE PIC:
Without question Bill Shoreman (son of Harry... in the cars passenger's seat) is the guy with the signature "crew cut" .
I've spent my youth in Berkeley finding any reason to hang out at Lukes and Shoreman. Treasured fond memories!!!
I've only met Richie Lukes one time. I believe he is the one in glasses with the winners flag.
Real question...where did the forms go for the counter balanced crank on the wall go? Some say Jim at EASY ended up with this stuff...but that is just a rumor.
Now that Jim has retired does anyone know where this masterpiece of engineering has gone?
They were 356 innovators beyond reproach... from what I've heard Richie Lukes is the genius behind the majority of this innovation.

Chip, Thanks for the note.
Just to be clear, the guy in the passenger seat has a hat on. The guy sitting up on the cowl has a crew cut (I think).
Which one is Bill Shorman?
Oh, and can you identify the driver? Walt Benson maybe?
Thanks.

Re: Searching for Lukes and Shorman race cars and info
The young guy sitting upright in the car with the crew cut is Bill Shoreman. He is sitting upright behind his dad Harry Shoremen (sitting low in the passenger seat with the hat on). Richie Lukes (I'm pretty sure) is in the glasses with the winner's flag.
Hope this helps. Bill had this photo in his office.

Excellent, thanks!
BTW, I have the original photograph in an old frame. Must have been his.
