What connector to use for Sat Nav or ANother modern gizmo

#1 Post by Vincent Gillespie »

Hello all, we have power available in the auxiliary socket and cigarette lighter but what type of connector have others used as the connecting plug. We have 2 that we use in our modern car & they both fit the cigarette lighter but no power flows and they are both too big for the Aux socket. All help and advice welcomed.

Thanks Vincent

Check the wiring to the cigarette lighter; it powers my Garmin with no problem.

Probably the connectors are too short and do not make contact.

The accessory socket is a DIN they are available at a BMW motor cycle dealer to EBay, The lighter socket is a standard also. I had a garmin plugged in to my accessory socket 6V. worked fine for couple years and one day at High RPM the voltage regulator over voltage let the smoke out.

I put a small 12V "emergency EXIT light battery" from Home Depot in the trunk, back, out board of the drivers hinge, under the trunk mat. Held it with a couple magnets. I wired it to the accessory socket. I run the cell phone and GPS on it now. lasts a couple days but you need to recharge it.

Most cells and GPS actually work on 5V and work fine on 6V input, but my generator/regulator fooled me.

EBay Search "Hella DIN Accessory Plug: here is a dual lighter adapter, there are tons out there.

You can take power from the cigarette lighter in the T-6 and later car and wire a DIN socket on he left side of the dash. On the T-5 car and earlier you can take power off the fuse panel. In either case fuse the wire. The female socket is $46.50 and the male part is 19.95. These parts are in stock. Usually the 356C cars do not have an auxiliary sockets. al zim, Zim's Autotechnik 800.356.2964

I charge a battery pack from amazon and use that to charge my cell and anything else in the car.

Go to Amazon and buy a 6 to 12 volt converter, there is one that is 10 amps output for a round $25. Wire it into one of the three terminals labeled #54 and the power will only be on with ignition on then connect to the cigarette lighter. Hide it under the dash, I keep mine in place with velcro. Clean the +ve terminal in the socket and it should work.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
