Brakes--Take 2 -- still having issues

#1 Post by Joel Gardner »

So I posted a month or so ago about my '59 pulling to the right upon braking. Took everyone's advice on renewing the brake system. I went to a reputable shop in the Seattle area (will go unnamed for now as they want to make things right). They said a rear brake cylinder was locking up and lines needed replaced, etc. Went with new wheel cylinders all the way around and lines. Master cylinder not changed. Report that brakes were bled 4 times. They said it test drove normal after repairs.
Have the car back, and still pulls to the right. Brakes feel spongy.... can hardly stop the car when the brake is crammed to the floor with max foot pressure. I drive this car a lot and have for the past eight or so years. I've had an occasion where someone pulled out in front of me and had to emergency brake and the the wheels locked up and the tires chirped. There is no way that would happen now. It's basically a slow stop. The shop is sending a carrier to pick the car back up.
Just wanted thoughts on what's going on and why it still pulls to one side???

Were the drums turned and the shoes arced to the drums?

Mike. No they were not. They inspected them and said all was good.

Joel, for optimum braking, the drums should have been turned and the shoes arced to them.

Joel, be careful if the drums were (or do get) turned. Make sure they stay within the factory allowable limits and don't become oversize.

Excellent old shoes and drums are generally arced perfectly to match each other. I wouldn’t rush to replace if not really needed.

Sounds like someone got his slave cylinders mixed up. I would suggest they check they are not in ass backwards. It is easy to do if you are not really familiar with the differences.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Since it pulled right before I took it in, but the brakes worked better before being "fixed,"' thinking the slave cylinder mix up explains the spongy, lack of braking, but not the pull to the right?

A soft pedal is most likely air still un-bled. Swapped cylinders could give a nice hard pedal but no good stopping power. They need to check both.
