356C sloppy gear shift lever

#1 Post by Bill Scholfield »

Hi, small problem on my 63C, when I shift into reverse in a hurry, the lever turns through 90 degrees clockwise and feels as if it could come out completely. I am about to replace cups etc to sort out a rattle, any idea what this problem could be? Might it be the plate that fits under the lever?

Thanks, Bill

Probably your shifter stop plate is worn or missing. https://www.stoddard.com/69542401501.html.html You really won't know until you get in there. I am going to guess that your rattle is because the shifter guide ring is in pieces laying in the tunnel floor. https://www.stoddard.com/69542421101.html.html I have renewed the shifter bushings in 3 of the 4 356s I have owned.Do the shift coupler bushings at the same time. It makes for a very nice smooth shift action when all is renewed.

It's also possible that the little pin which keeps it 'clocked' has fallen out; it's held in by a spring wire which wraps around the top of the housing. Or maybe used to hold it in place.
Here's a walk through of the bushing replacement:

Ron has put the finger on the problem. The pin prevents the shifter from rotating and the wire keeps it in place.

If the plastic bushing has disintegrated it will allow the shift lever to go too deep thus allowing it to rotate whilst pressing it down to engage reverse.
