Question 64 Coupe side window fit

#1 Post by Joseph Boyce »

Can somebody please advise- is the chrome rail on top of the door supposed to fit tight against the base of the vent window? I have about an 1/8 inch gap which I can't eliminate. The furry weatherstrip has too much bulk and if try to adjust the gap smaller the side window binds against the furry weatherstrip. Seems like Porsche's design concept was to allow lots of water to drain down inside the door.

Joseph,

Its been a while since I did mine, but there is a smaller piece of plastic strip glued into place in that gap, figure 8 in shape.

It tends to not stay in place very well, others may disagree, maybe just the way I placed mine.

Eric,

I see what you mean. It's the same profile us underneath the chrome rail. I also see what you mean about not staying in place. I just slipped it in and its snug at the front and rear and sags in the middle.
I'll figure some way to hold it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

There is a thicker rubber profile strip that fits nicely.

When installing the door top chrome trim strip you need to "pull the front closer to the window by having a spacer between mounting tab and body. There is an old thread about this. I will look for it and post if I find it. See Robert Vaughan's pictures and discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32579#p181172

Great info, Doug. I have found that rather than using the slotted screws to attach the furry strip, Phillips head screws of the same size are easier to embed.

And Neil Goldberg http://neils356.com hates windows scratched by a screw backing out and always uses pop rivets instead of screws.

I got it to work with the help of some black silicone. Looks OK. Where can I get the the thicker rubber profile Geoff? I used 3m weatherstrip adhesive on the fuzzy strip. I've found this stuff to be highly durable. See how long it lasts.

Thanks all for the help.

Joseph,
I'll see if I still have some. You'll be welcome to it. One other tip, when installing the rubber trim strips...use of a hair dryer to soften the rubber will help in reducing the sag. The rubber becomes more pliant and can be fitted more easily.
Just don't over-do the heat.

Hi Geoff,

Can you mention where you got the larger profile beading, myself and I am sure others would be interested.

Many Thanks.

The thicker profile was found amid a large quantity of rubber Porsche seals/fittings which I inherited from another enthusiast. Probably used for the front turn signal-to-body seal on B and C cars.

I got some larger figure of 8 seals from my late friend who had a 60 Roadster. Not sure if it was used on them? Perhaps a call to International Mercantile and one could source it and/or get their part number if they have it?

O.K., I examined a length of the wider, thicker beading and believe it is the strip used under the hood handle. Seems to come in lengths of about 1 foot, so it would be just enough for two vent window treatments.
A perfectionist may notice the extra thickness but it serves the purpose.
