Bosch 0342 Ignition switch problem

#1 Post by Neil Bardsley »

I have a new Bosch 0342 switch to install. Looks almost exactly like the one I'm replacing but will only turn anti clockwise to 75 terminal. Will not turn to 15 or 50? I must be doing something silly

Hi Neil, Do you need to push the key farther in to access those other terminals?

It's like there is something blocking me from doing that. Something that I need to remove?

Neil, Just checked one of my 0342 units. When you can insert without pushing strongly and remove the key, the key is in the middle of three initial positions. From here you can turn the key one click to the left and one click to the right. Put the key in the right position, and push the key in further and then it can turn further to the right (I believe to engage the starter), then it should spring back to the right position and also back out slightly to the un-depressed right position. Sorry I don’t know the terminal numbers for these different key positions

Well I've contacted the seller as never Mrs B or myself can get it to move into 1 or 2 positon :(

Unfortunately I must also slap myself on the wrist for not disconnecting the battery while making this change. I managed to short my amp gauge :(

Well that was one of thoughts but only two keys came with the ignition switch with the it and neither work. I did think that somehow they put the wrong keys in with the ignition switch but that would of meant they someone had to open the box take out the good keys and put in bad ones! Seems unlikely.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Where did you buy the switch ?

Does anybody still sell the spider or whatever one would call it that wears out in the ignition switch. Stoddard used to sell it but they are out of stock. I have a switch I would like to repair.

ebay. Seller quite aggressive about asking for feedback (before I had tested the switch and which I never give until I've used the product) but hasn't responded to my message yet!

I take that back. They have refunded what I paid.

Both PR Services and Roger Bray are showing ignition switches on their sites.

After measuring the resistance on the two switches it was about the same. I suspect the problem I had with voltage drop was the wires

I cut off the end and reexposed some metal
