PPI in Vermont

#1 Post by Bhagdeep DHaliwal »

I am looking at purchasing a 1961 356 from a gentleman in Vermont and need a recommendation to someone who can complete a PPI for me. I'll be buying the car sight unseen as I am in California and can't fly out to Vermont in the near future. This will be my first 356. Would really like to get a set of eyes on it as the car seems to be in good condition and set up ideally for my intended use as a driver. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bill,

It's probably Steve Restelli's car. I know he had it up for sale about a month ago.

+1 for RPM Motors in Vergennes. Northern Motorsports in Wilder may be another option, but not sure how much 356 experience they have (often see various older 911's there though).

The car in question is a nice example IMO, and price has come way down since first listed.

I am about 30 minutes from this car and could take a look at it for you as well.

Thanks for the recommendations. I ended going with Restoration & Performance Motorcars, www.rpmvt.com and was very satisfied with the reports and costs.

Having lived and driven 356 Porches on both coasts, I would never buy an Eastern 356 and import it to California. Eastern 356s have lived in conditions of snow and salt unknown in the West. California cars go east, not the other way around.

Harlan, there are some terrific 356’s from the east coast that spent their lives as summer cars only and were garaged during the bad weather. They are therefore are every bit as good as west coast cars and have lower mileage since they weren’t driven year round. I’m surprised that you subscribe to that west coast blindness/snobbery and always thought you were better than that.

I bought my SC Cab from the EAST Coast and it's 99% original RUST free panels, including floor pan.. Pretty sure both coasts have good and bad!!!

The real myth of the "California Car" is how many went out there in the 60's and 70's and made it back to the East Coast or Europe as "Cali Cars." My car was sold in NY, but migrated to Norcal in the 80's and then came back east as a Cali Car. Nope, same car.
And if you guys haven't figured out by now, Harlan has a very narrow view of the kind of 356 he likes, and doesn't have much time for people who like something else, I doubt you're going to change his mind, so best to leave him alone to his thoughts.

What was not cool about it was coming in to a thread and basically crapping all over the seller and buyer with an opinion and not fact. Perhaps he should let the shop who inspects it let the buyer know what the condition is instead of guessing from 2,500 miles away.

I have a lot of California friends and I chuckle whenever I go visit. Most of their lectures to me start with "Well, here in California blah blah blah blah blah" And my response is always, "yeah, we have that too" or "yes, I have three different friends who have that" or some such response. I still love them though but always marvel at their blind ignorance about some things.

I agree, Harlan's blanket comment was in poor taste.

Chuckle..I thought my comment might get a howl from a few easterners. And I didn't even mention the high humidity, the temperature cycling, and the rain puddles!

Of course, poorly maintained cars turn into rust buckets out here too. Checkout my WCSTA-06-56-T1 postings to see one.

But this string was started by a Californian new to 356s looking for a cheaper car. Buying such a car from the East partly because it is cheaper than the local cars is risky, in my opinion. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

There's no hard, fast rule on cars from either coast being better or worse. I lived in California for many years and I've seen quite a few rust buckets, mainly from coastal areas and that weren't properly cared for. On the other hand, there are some really nice cars from snowy eastern states that haven't seen as many miles because they were stored for winter. Either coast (and the middle states too) have both good and bad cars. It's an individual car thing. PPIs are the answer, and Bahgdeep is going that route, which I think is smart on his part.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....
