Starter Motor Bushing: How Flush is Flush?

I've got one of Al Zim's premium rebuilt starter motors coming next week and in the mean time have been doggedly working on replacing the starter motor bushing in my 1962 T6-B normal.

I feel as if I've driven the new bushing in as far as I can, but it's still not - quite - flush. I'm guessing it's (less than) 1/16" proud. See the attached photos. Should I be concerned?

Thanks for any words of encouragement, commiseration, or help.

P.S. In the photos I can see some blue painter's tape I'll need to remove/clean out - I can't imagine doing this work without a cellphone camera!

It looks like someone spiked the previous bearing and it's keeping the bushing from seating.
That said I'd leave it as is.
More pounding might burr the bushing and cause grief installing the starter.
Looks like the old starter did a number on the flywheel but not much you can do about it without pulling the engine and dressing it.

Thanks! Will wait for the new motor and keep my fingers crossed.

Unfortunately the starter is rotating a little too soon before the gear engages the F/wheel teeth since the engine stops in 2-places around 180 degrees apart; I've repaired several of them over the years.

Interesting - the old starter was still spinning when I turned the ignition, it just stopped engaging. I figured the solenoid was going bad. I guess I'll just have to see how the new one works out (in relation to the worn teeth on the flywheel).

Your starter bushing is fine! I would have someone slowly turn the engine over (by hand) so that you can look at the teeth on the starter ring. What I see is passable check the rest of the teeth the engine usually stops in one place and that really chews up the teeth. al zim

Nils,

The starter's gear is hardened/heat treated; the F/wheel teeth aren't.
Also, the engine generally stops in 2-places when it shuts off.

Sure that starter bush is fine, Nils.
And why does the engine only stop in 1or 2 positions? enabling it to tear up the same teeth on the flywheel. Surely not by design!
Cheers Jay

It stops in those two positions (but not at the same time, for those SAs out there) because that's where it's coming up on compression.

Thanks gentlemen! I'm happy to report that the new starter is in and it is cranking the brand new engine. Next step - remove the spark plugs and crank it in earnest. Time to post a spark plug question (sigh). Attaching a photo showing the hose-clamp tip for one-man upper starter bolt installation I picked up on this forum.
