Exhaust sound

#1 Post by Don Gale »

So how is it a 356 (912) exhaust sounds pleasing, wereas a very similar Subaru flat 4, especially WRX, sounds like it's missing on 1 or 2 cylinders? . . . discuss.

the firing order is different
Porsche 356 -1-4-3-2
wrx- 1-3-4-2
the WRX fires no. 1 on the left front then no. 3 left rear then to the other side. the 356 gos from one side to the other

Dunno; I think it has to do with the muffler.
There's a Subi which regularly parks in front of my shop for lunch, and I swear it's a beetle every time it leaves. And T-1 VWs share the 616 firing order.

Ditto, must be the combustion chamber design, exhaust plumbing, and muffler, and the Subie's much larger displacement. Firing orders end up being the same VW-356-912-Subie:

. . . too much time on my hands . . .

Edit:

In the case of Subaru WRX, it has to do with unequal length headers:

Don, your right. I thought it was do to different strokes and firing order. that's what a friend of mine told me that has one, but he probably heard it from someone else.

Is number 3 cylinder closer to the flywheel than number 1 on a Subaru s it is on a 616 motor?

It's opposite. Subie Cyl. 3 is further from the flywheel than Subie Cyl. 4. Subie Cyl. 1 is at the front-right of the car.
