Transmission Troubles - '61 Roadster 356B

#1 Post by don handal »

My beloved 1961 356B D'Iteren Roadster is experiencing transmission problems beyond my skill and experience. I am having increasing difficulty engaging in first gear as well as trouble down shifting. Recently, I have had problems with reverse. I have had this car for 35 years and am in need of a recommendation for serious transmission repair/rebuild facility. I am located in SW Connecticut. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That may well be a dragging clutch. An adjustment might cure it, or maybe the cable is beginning to fail, also an inexpensive fix.

It might be a slight loosening at the shift coupler. Try tightening the set screw underneath. Or you just might need new bushings and an adjustment.

I assume that you have checked and the transmission is full of 80 90 transmission fluid?

gaswerks is highly recommended, good guys, do not know what they know about old 356 models, but we sell them thousands of dollars of Porsche parts every year! Their paintwork and bodywork is superb

What is the trouble downshifting? Hard to engage or bad noises?

Very difficult to get into first gear without double clutching. Second gear is also difficult to engage but less so than first. In reverse, the car almost stops when clutch is released. I have had the car for 35 years and have replaced the clutch several times. Rennwerke looked at clutch and brakes and said they were both fine.

Did they check clutch adjustment since it began acting this way?
