Type 64 Coming up for Auction

#1 Post by Scott McAdams »

I see Sothebys is auctioning off the only remaining Porsche Type 64 Porsche this August. If you go to the RMSothebys site, it is on the first page. I saw one guess at $20 million....

Thanks for the links David. It is somewhat surprising that the Porsche-extended family doesn't want this car back. I wonder if they were offered it privately and couldn't agree on price, or whether they just don't have an interest?

It is all over TV news being referred to as "the oldest Porsche". Not exactly! By their criteria the 189? electric car might qualify.

When this car was for sale in 1996/97, Porsche AG offered "two stickers and a handshake"...................... can we imagine that they will bid next August?

I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that this car (at Rennsport Reunion VI) was a Typ 64:

I think that may be a replica. I’d love to see that in my back yard.

I'm pretty sure this and #001 were replicas. It is amazing this isn't in the Porsche Museum.

From what I was told by a very wise porschephile, the black one and the one coming up for auction are the original 2 of the three built. The third one was destroyed by soldiers in WW2.

Based on the Sothebys write up this the 3rd one which used the frame from the first which was in a severe accident. The second was destroyed in the war so this is the only surviving original. I think the black one used a few parts from the wrecked # 1 but is essentially a replica. The providence is unbelievable and it seems incredibly original and certainly not over restored. Patina to die for. Should be in the museum and I'd like to hear the full story of why Porsche effectively turned down the car in 96/97.

Very cool car. It’s been known to have been for sale though.

Otto Mathe had #2 with the T-2222 plate and raced it. I spoke to the guys working on this car on Thursday at Rennsport. It was on loan from the Prototype Museum Hamburg. I believe only three were made, https://prototyp-hamburg.de/en/

I couldn’t figure out how to do a word search in the magazine archives. There was a story about the black car a while back. If I remember correctly, Prototyp Museum purchased Mathé’s Fetzenflieger and some old timer told them it had Type 64 parts from one of the crashed cars. Prototyp built the rest of the black type 64 car around the Fetzenflieger chassis and transmission so that makes it “original” these days. Still a cool story about some cool cars. J

There are many ways to claim a car is the "oldest"/'first"/"whatever".....

If Porsche is not beating down the door to buy it what does that tell you?

The car was originally a VW, the Type 60/k10. The history of its purpose is not in doubt but it didn't start its life as a "Porsche", it started as a VW and Ferry put their name on the nose after its original purpose went away. The race never happened and the Porsche family had possession so why not put their name on the nose?

Heck, the #1 Roadster also started life as a VW and after Heinz Nordhoff of VW rejected it as a second vehicle to pay royalties on, Ferry brought it back to Gmund, slapped their name on it and began parading it around as a "Porsche".

The first car that was purpose-built as a Porsche is whichever 356/2 chassis was finished and roadworthy first. Chuck Stoddard will argue that it is his and he may very well be right.

So..........which car is the first or oldest "Porsche". The Type 64, the #1 Roadster or the first completed Gmund 356/2? Porsche gets to decide but throughout its history they have stuck with the #1 Roadster, and that is and always was purely marketing. I mean, if that car was really the first one then why were all of the subsequent cars so different from it and why did the original drawings call it a VW Sport Roadster?

From the strictest definition, and if it were up to me, I would call the first car that actually started life as a Porsche and was completed first to be the "first" or "oldest" Porsche and that would be one of the Gmund 356/2 chassis, but hey, it's not up to me.

The real test is what does the factory do here? If they buy it and label it the first/oldest then there you have it. If they don't then it's just a really, really cool piece of the company's history, but not the oldest "Porsche".
