Help! Transmission barking near Salzburg.

#1 Post by Craig Richter »

We shipped our '60 356 "Lucretia" from California to Lelystad, Nederlands, with the intent of attending the International 356 Meeting in Switzerland end of this month. Yesterday, on the way south to our summer flat near Salzburg, Austria, the transmission began to make very strange noises! Started loud "banging" going around Autobahn exits, but went away when resumed straight ahead, but very uncomfortable "creaking and groaning" driving around the Autohof getting gas. Mostly went away driving on Autobahn, but comes back when parking and/or driving slowly. I'm not actually Austrian, and don't know where to get this thing fixed here. Can anyone out there help?
Vic, is this imminently fatal, or can we drive it around some? Thanks all.

Porsche Holdings is headquartered in Salzburg. Contact and try for a local resource. I know I wouldn't drive at this point. Jim Liberty has family in Germany. Maybe shout out to Jim?

If a fulcrum plate has slipped out of position, it will bind the inner end of the axle and cause loud banging upon turns. You might also drain the trans oil and see if it is silvery...if so, it might be a sign of disintegration of a moving piece of the differential components.

Fulcrum plate cannot dislodge once assembled. Definitely DON'T drive it! Sounds like broken diff carrier.

Vic is most certainly correct. This happened to my Speedster and it ruined the tranny case. I had to purchase a "new" tranny.
Don't drive it!

Remember; the diff housing is the same in all 1959 and older VW SPLIT-CASE transmissions.

Craig, have to tried Peter Hoffman, he should be able to direct you to a good shop. We leave for Germany on Friday, and will depart on our drive, prior to the 356 International Meeting. Hope you get back on the road for the event. Hope to see you two in Switzerland. …….Jim.

Hi Erich,
Thanks for message on Facebook. I read German OK, but can speak only simple stuff. We did get home safely, but Lucretia is stuffed. Yes, please, could really use some help. You know 356 guys in Amstetten? That's not so far from Traunkirchen. Maybe they could be of help.
Enjoy Morro Bay. It's raining here, all week.
Craig

I have a 6 bolt carrier that Vic magnafluxed. Slight crack, but Vic thought ok for street car. Could ship over if none available locally. Will defer to Vic if that is a good idea or not.

Thanks to all that have assisted so far. Found an old VW diff carrier in my friend Peter's attic in the Nederlands, looks like it's been there for decades, but no cracks evident. Had to spend 2000E for a new R&P from Belgium. All parts should be in my Austria post in a few days. Tomorrow will begin quest for good mechanic, starting near, probably going afar. This would all be kinda fun if it wasn't so time hectic. Again, thanks to Peter, Jim, Roland, Robert, my banker Herr Leitner, Erich, Vic, everybody trying to contribute. I'll let you know how things progress. I love this Forum.

Plenty more are willing to help, but have neither the knowledge or ability.
Good luck, Craig.
