Help! Transmission barking near Salzburg.

Hey Craig,

Besides the emails, here’s what Jack thinks based upon your description of a barking sound when turning. One of the teeth has been chipped. He recommends draining the trans fluid and seeing what’s in it. The repair can be done with the engine and trans in the car but you will have to remove the J pipe. He prefers the 12 bolt vs 6 bolt carrier.

Thanks for the pics and advice Jack/Trevor. Drained fluid, no teeth. Located good local mechanic, Franz Leister (in Pinsdorf, nothing's much local to Traunkirchen, population 400 on a sunny day) and he'll start next week. Parts should be here way before, so I'll have time to clean and inspect dirty old diff carrier. Won't have a 356 for International Meeting, but what the heck, we'll go anyway.

I'm glad you are able to quickly source replacement parts and line up a good mechanic. I had the misfortune of a snapped carrier collar while driving on Hwy 1 near Fort Ross in NoCal, under light throttle after exiting a turn. I heard a subtle "pop" then "crunch" and it was virtually not driveable afterwards. I wasn't sure what happened at the time so I parked it and had it towed. I had the 644 trans (BBBC?) completely rebuilt with a 12 bolt ring gear & later model carrier. I forget what else they did while they had it apart. I gave them a blank check and trusted them to do it right. They assured me it is now bullet proof as long as I don't get too happy with it in 1st gear. No telling what history the trans had before I acquired it. It was a good used quiet trans with no issues (other than almost certainly having a cracked carrier collar) that I bought from Aase Bros. for $325 plus core exchange, to replace the original, which was in need of 1st & reverse plus new syncros. Cheaper at the time as a starving student to swap a used one than to rebuild my original. This was in 1975 when parts were (relatively) cheap. I think I paid $600 or $650 for the subsequent full rebuild back then. 17k miles on it since then. Hoping to refresh the motor and be back on the road soon.

I experienced this in 1967, in my '57 T1, with early 644. I bought used parts, then, from our dealership service manager, who raced a speedster, later Al, & Ed's. You might check out 356 racers. My used carrier, was as Vic said, a 36 HP VW, Best of Luck!

I've since removed diffs, with the engine in the car, as Trevor said, but just to inspect the carrier, Magnaflux, and replace the bolts, with new, out of a sense of caution. I may have read about this, in "How TO Make An Old Porsche Fly", written by a good friend of this forum... Thanks, from us all, Craig!

Hi All,
It would seem the 12-bolt diff carrier in Lucretia is still in one piece, but one of the axle support bearings failed, maybe hurting spider gear(s). I had to leave Franz' werkstatt for another appointment this afternoon, so more later...
Seems Jack can diagnose stuff from thousands of miles away!

Craig, IIRC, those spider gears, are 36 HP VW, as well. +1, on Jack!

Should we use it? Have a good 6-bolt VW. We are installing a new stock R&P, getting rid of the (loud, Italian) 7/34 Carrera ratio, as long we're working on it anyway.

+1 for lack of oiling the inside of the diff. As Vic mentioned, damn near no oil to the fulcrum plates. Looks stronger than the original part, but no gear oil where needed is a problem. This was a Zim's part?

Hi All,
Although I appreciate the problem with lack of oiling holes in the Zim's diff housing, especially after reading Vic's and other's archive posts, and Samba posts covering the same subject (provided by my friend Jack Staggs), none of this seems to be my problem. See attached photos. Axle ends, fulcrum plates and gears all look OK to my blind eye. One of the big bearings was bad, and one outer wheel bearing was "loose", but Franz and I cannot figure out what made the first BANG, BANG, BANG. Any further ideas?
