My dad's 1964 C, built right before the factory's summer vacation, had a mechanical tachometer. I thought the mechanical vs. electric tachometer was one of the few differences between the model years 1964 and 1965.

many times the bouncing is caused by a lack of lubricant in the cable causing it to constantly bind and then release. Disconnect it at the gauge, few drops of oil in that end, keep it pointing up and start the engine for a few seconds. Either that or just replace the cable. make sure the new one is lubricated.

There was a thread a few months ago about the differences between the 64 and 65b model years. I recall that it was determined that the electric tach was added as a running change during the 64 model year (around April?). My May/June of 1964 SC has the electric tach.

Hi Richard
Many years ago when we installed a 912 engine in the 356 we installed a Full Flow Oil system. This has never given any problem , however because the 912 didn't have the mechanical Tach drive from the oil pump, we installed a 6 Volt electronic Tacho.
Now whenever the car is out in the rain and damp weather the tacho needle jumps to about 6K rpm and back to 750rpm whenever the footbrake is applied. I have never been able to find out why! The electronic 6V tacho has always given a steady reading, except when hitting the brakes in the wet! It's a mystery.

Does anyone make a cover to go over the tach drive at the engine to seal it off after the tach drive cable is disconnected and the tachometer converted to electric?

Does anybody have an old tachometer cable housing that I can buy and cut the fitting off to re-engineer it as a plug?

If not I am pretty sure an air-cooled VW speedo cable has the same end and is very cheap. CIP 1 is a good supplier.

I bought a nicely machined cap from a member who unfortunately passed away not long ago. Opportunity for someone to make them - he'll make tens of dollars!

If you are using a full flow oil filter from Precision install the 912 or 356C oil pump gear without the tachometer drive. Everything should bolt in easily. We have just converted a 356C to 12 volts a necessity for fuel injection. He had tachometer problems and finally decided to have a new one made. More expensive than the one you got for your hot rod in 1962.

Hi All
I know this is an old post But we cured the wildly waving needle on our 6 Volt electronic Tacho when we rewired it, when we installed a Blue coil recently !
Also if anyone is thinking of this conversion to electronic Tacho, you can use the mechanical tacho's outer cable housing as a conduit to easily feed and reach the engine bay for your wiring. We used 4 core (think we used 2 of these 4) single strand wire with outer insulation.

That’s a clever idea to run the wire through.

Well if nobody has a used cable housing that I can cut up and make work for my customer, I'll go look for something new. CIP has a bunch of speed cables of various lengths. Hopefully something will fit the oil pump thread.

I think the speedo cables are the same thread.
