Battery for 356 SC 1964

#1 Post by Erik Erdal »

My battery had a bad cell, and no cranking power. Shopped around and found that NAPA auto parts sells 6V batteries that fits the 356 SC perfectly. It is a commercial grade battery, they sell this to farmers that operates 6V equipment I was told.
I picked it up for $99.00, and my 1964 SC is all juiced up. Very happy with this.

O’Reilly sells one similar. What I like about it is it’s part number: “1”. It’s literally part#1 in their system and that makes ordering it a breeze. “Yeah, I’d like a number one please”.

I bought a new 6-volt battery from Tractor Supply about six months ago. The one I had previously was also a Tractor supply battery that has been in the car for approx. six years. I guess I got my money's worth out of it. Definitely worth the $75.00. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produ ... _vc=-10005

Larger than a 19L but may fit sort of. Lots of CCA's though.

Thanks for all replies.

Now, I have a question of which is the best battery tender/charger - for winter - for my 356SC's 6V battery? I bought one on Amazon, and got what I bargained for - a poor unit that lasted for 4 months, then Kaput. What does my experienced 356 friends can recommend. Thanks in advance. Erik

I buy mine from Walmart, about $20 so far no complaints. All 5 work and have done for years.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I've got 5 of these from Harbor Freight. https://www.harborfreight.com/4-amp-ful ... ry+charger
Have used them for 3 years for my house electrics gasoline back-up generator, the 356, the 911 Carrera S, the yard tractor, and a spare to lend to various friends who come looking for one. If you follow Harbor Freight you know they have about 3 different prices for everything and I've picked all these up for less than $29.00 each time. At that price they make a good gift to your car guy friends, too.

This one from Walmart is I think good value too. Even cheaper than the ones I bought.

Black and Decker has a line of maintainers/chargers that are inexpnsive and should be better than the no name problem ones.

Have been using a CTEC 6V battery maintenance charger for our 356C cab for over 12 yrs. Very satisfied, and would highly recommend. ( www.ctek.com )
Available from several sources, including Amazon.

Agree with CTEK. I have three of them for various Porsche's and never had a problem. I believe this is the brand that Porsche sells as well. Not the cheapest but not crazy expensive either.
