Valve stems

#1 Post by Ian William Stockwell »

Can anybody tell me if the intake and exhaust valve stems on a 1600 normal engine are solid or hollow?

Thank you

Ian

Ian,

The valve stems were never hollow; Only under the head(s) and barely touching the stem(s) of the OEM SC/912 exhaust valves.

Hello Al/Dick

Do you know what the material the valves are made from and possibly their hardness?

Ian,

Early normal and Super exhaust valves had added material to the 45 degree faces which lengthened their lives--until some burn-thru took place and compression was lost.
I never determined the later valve material (other than aftermarket stainless steel versions), but hey lasted longer if they were set to spec clearances during services.
Then came the later SC/912 (including the Carrera) valves having the sodium addition between the valve head and the stem; This lengthened the valve life to its seat face.
