Re: Third Brake Light
" During the last Palms to Pines, I was following Trevor Gates and Jack Staggs. The car they were driving had a third brake light with (I believe) the Lereyn Flasher connected. When Trevor stepped on the brakes the third light would flash 3 times then come on steady. Very effective. "
Yes, that is the (now unavailable ?) Lereyn Flasher. The 3 flashes does a good job in getting attention from following cars.

Re: Third Brake Light
Third brake lights should always be positioned as high up as possible. Remember...people today are driving more trucks and SUVs, so the forward vision is concentrated much higher. No one bothers to look down.
I've also been rear-ended twice in just over a year but in a Mercedes, not the 356. Last time while I was waiting at a standing red light. Modern drivers just don't seem to care.

Re: Third Brake Light
I have to agree with Geoff.
The light will be positioned at the top of the window, even though I would like to put it behind the grills, it makes more safety sense to have it high.

Re: Third Brake Light
I found this the other day. I made it, lost it, and made another. It bolts to the center holes on a twin grille luggage rack set up. Same M8 threads as rack bolts. You would have to bolt or weld a mounting tab of some sort to attach your third brake light. Stainless steel. If anyone can use it, pay the postage and it’s yours. J

Randy,
Thank you for that link, some good clear pictures on that one.
For anyone considering using that location what is the favoured wiring route.

Here is a picture of third brake light taken from their website.
It shows the bracket in place on the window.
The first 6 inches of wire is covered in black sheath to hide the coloured wire.

Re: Third Brake Light
I ordered this Brakelighter after seeing the link in this thread. I installed it in my back window yesterday, and it seems like it will be quite effective. It's not the most discreteEricMcKinley wrote: ↑Sun Apr 21, 2019 2:31 am Here is a picture of third brake light taken from their website.

thing but probably worth it for the added safety. The wire connections were easy, connecting to the rear brake/turn signal bulbs gives you brake and turn signals on the Brakelighter. The time consuming part was getting the wires discretely from the back window under the the interior panels and carpet through the rear tunnel access panel into the lower engine bay and back to the rear lights. I needed approximately 10'- 12' of extra wire to get it done. The light comes with 10'.

Re: Third Brake Light
I ordered a third brake lighter myself.
A few days later a Leryn third brake light, 12 volt, new, never installed, came up for sale on the registry. I decided to buy it and make a decision which one I would use when I had the two together.
I knew that Jack made great products, having bought other parts in the past from him. Sadly Jack has now passed on and I believed the chances of getting one to be very slim, it appears luck was on my side on this occasion.
I have taken a comparison picture of both lights, the bottom light in the picture is the Leryn, significantly smaller, half the size of the other, a lot more discreet looking.
I plan to use the Leryn.

Re: Third Brake Light
Eric,
If you are going down the outlaw route without bumpers you definately need a high level third brake light.
When I had YNZ make me a new wiring harness I had the extra cables included for other things as well as a third brake light which I now have in the car.
I bought a third brake light kit from Leryn which I thought was expensive and didnt fit very well without a bit of trimming of the plastic strip that fits under the rear windor rubber (and occasionaly falls out). The top of rear windscreen is a good place for a third brake light but the cables need fitting before the headlining is installed otherwise good luck with getting the cable into the rear window rubber.
Its a YES from me.
Robin.

Re: Third Brake Light
Hugo, enjoyed that little video and the solution.
Robin, I fitted the Lleryn third brake light a number of weeks back, I won't say it was easy but was not as difficult as I thought it was going to be.
The initial fitting of the actual light under the trim didn't require any trimming of the rubber and it seems to be fairly well held.
I added a bit of black heat shrink to the first few inches of wire to make this less visible and then slowly raised the rear glass rubber trim with a small wooden craft stick, this does not cause any damage and allowed me to push the wires far back into the trim.
I then fed it down between the rear panel and the side panel, drivers side, this requires removing the trim piece at the quarter window for a while. Then pushed under the sides of the carpets until it eventually comes out at the pedal area, however one wire needs to go to the tunnel access cover where it is secured, again simply under the side of the carpet, yes I had to pull the sides of the carpet up a little to get the wire into place but once glued back it was as before, the wires are extremely thin and fit well under the rubber and carpet.
Very pleased that I placed a third brake light and definetly worth the trouble given the advantages it gives with regards to safety.
