Removing stock steering wheel on 356B T6

#1 Post by Richard Holler »

So I want to remove the stock wheel for some restoration work (I have a momo wheel so i can still drive the car) and I just want to confirm the removal process to reduce any damage to the horn button in particular.

1. straighten stock wheel so front wheels are straight ahead.
2. disconnect battery so horn does not sound.
3. turn steering wheel all the way left and ensure turn signal selector stalk is in neutral postion.
4. with right palm on horn button and left hand on top of right, push down and turn counter clockwise to remove horn button. (similar to opening a medicine bottle I suppose?)
5. disconnect steering wheel bolt. (27mm? Impact wrench ok to use for removal? what is tightening torque spec?)

The momo wheel horn/cap has one bronze connection that goes to the mobo hub wire. Also, it appears the ground has a bronze c clip like extension on the side which is built into the underside of the cap and makes contact with the hub ring spacer. So ,basically, there is just one wire that I need to worry about?

Thanks, Rick

You have the right sequence. Impact wrench makes removal easy. Torque spec? Not sure. Never used one. With the wave washer I just tighten it down and it has never come loose. I checked my B service manual and don't see a torque spec. Someone on Pelican said 22 ft/lbs. ?? I can't help you on the Momo as I have only used stock steering wheels. If your horn button has never been off a LOT of push down is required.

Richard,

I would add to the #1 step in your sequence:

“Confirm that the alignment marks on the steering box and the steering input shaft are aligned”

This should correspond to your “straight ahead“ position, if not, it should be the default for wheel alignment and steering wheel position.
