I've gotten those from AAA (of which I am a member) just for the asking. Around here you waste much less time doing registration stuff at AAA than you do at the DMV.

Last January I went to DMV and basically asked if I could have a new Month sticker for my 1963 original license plate because mine was so faded you couldn’t see the lettering after 56 years of wear. The lady simply looked up my license number and opened her drawer handed me a January month sticker. I took it and never looked back in case she changed her mind. They never even asked to see the plate. I figured all they could do is tell me No.

Jon: when my month sticker was faded out, I took the plate to my local DMV and they gave me a new one for free. I've also seen them on eBay.

Jon Schmid wrote: Mon Mar 25, 2019 5:33 pm For me, the biggest challenge is finding the original red "month" stickers for my black/yellow plates. The one on the Roadster looks OK but the one on my coupe is getting a bit ratty looking.
You can buy stickers on eBay.

For the record, are you talking about the current "blue" tags or the original red tags? I know I can get blue ones from AAA with no problem. I'm looking for a red tag for the month of May.

Hi Jon
I must admit I clearly misunderstood your concern. Moreover I didn’t realize the monthly stickers were different colors. Where they different depending on Month or year of issue? They gave me a white one to replace an old faded “can’t even remember” what color tag. What color would I have had in 1963 ?

Mike is correct. The red tags are correct for the the 356s with the black plates with yellow lettering -- the plates issued in 1963. The yellow plates with black lettering -- the plates issued in 1956 -- just had yearly-issued tags. Now I need to get a red tag for my 63 if I don't want to be stopped by the authenticity police.

I was thinking that the Red Month Sticker didn't appear until like 66 or 67, before that just the year sticker, alternating from left to right. My 65 Chevelle has a stickers under the Red Aug, on the left and stack of many on the right side. The 356 has the Red Month Sticker from 1969 on the left, as I had to get new plates that year. The Blue stickers came out after 73, as DMV found the red faded to nothing. Photo is of Chevelle's sticker. Orange sticker residue underneath may be the original 65.

The red sticker was around in 63 when black plates were issued to all registered California cars. Here is an original month sticker put on when the plate was new. Notice the year stickers, over 50 of them stacked high..... :) I think they stick out at least 1/5 of an inch.

Here's a photo from the mid 70s showing the year only stickers on both left and right. No month sticker as of 74, the white sticker on the right is 74, it just didn't show welling the photo. All this trivia is a bit crazy, but.....

I seem to remember that back then you used both sides, alternating years, the little bag the the stickers came in showed which side you were suppose to put it on. In days of cruising Main St., when the police had nothing better to do but harass us, they issued fix-it tickets for having the sticker on the wrong side. I was ridding in a friends 60 Rambler and she had stuck the sticker on wrong and got a fix-it ticket, we had to heat it up a little bit peel it off and then get it signed off that night so her parents wouldn't find out she was out cruising instead of being at a game.
