Kardex story

#1 Post by Bruce Smith »

I finally broke down and got the Kardex for my ’63 coupe. I already knew most of it from the Porsche factory guys that provide details at Rennsport, etc., except the original owner. Long story short, I found the son of the guy on the Kardex. The car was apparently a wedding present from his parents (the dad was a cardiologist). Sent him some recent photos and made his day. Mine too.

You had help from a Kardiologist to find him. That's a nice story.

The kardex is the original Factory warranty card which has all the details, the COA was what Porsche was giving you based off the Kardex, but they were know for errors and you didn't get info like where the car was sold or who owned it. Here are two examples of the same car.
In this example there was a Factory replacement engine noted on the Kardex, but absent on the COA, so one document has real value, the other has little.

Lockie: someone may contact you about obtaining a copy of the Kardex. Figure $200+ USD.

Thanks again Dave for getting me my 2 Kardex's.
Got the COA and Kardex on the 53 and only the Kardex on my 65.
What are the odds of getting 2 factory Black 356's ?
Had no idea under all the coats of paint.

I was able to get the Kardex for my 59 Coupe a few years ago. It listed the name of the original purchaser and Reseda, Calif. I grew in in Encino, Calif which is about 4 miles away from Reseda. Took a chance on finding his phone number and called it. His wife answered the phone and then she handed the phone to him. We had a nice discussion about how he met his future wife on the plane to Europe while taking European delivery of the car. He then sent me a picture of his group and the car in front of the Palace of Versailles in 1959.
The Kardex may unlock many secrets to your vehicles history.

It would be great to get one for our car! We have the COA, but it is a bit thin. I always thought these were not really obtainable anymore... Where do we start?

Thanks,

Franny

Just a caution about the Kardex. While the 1961 Kardex above is quite complete there are many from the 50's that are very thin on information. One I got only had the engine #. The cars that went through Max Hoffman's distributorship tended to be rather poor. There is the odd chance that the Kardex may be missing as happened with one 912 I was asked to obtain. The problem is that one does not know what is on the Kardex until it is paid for & delivered. The CoA is now gone, and replaced by the PPS & CTC. The PPS supposedly has only engine & transmission type #'s and not serial #'s which you need to supply. The CTC requires an extensive dealership inspection of the car and only the engine and transmission present are considered (your original engine on the shelf is not considered). As always, the Reutter Certificate is almost essential for all but the last 356 cars since it goes into great detail on paint and interior finishes.

Hello David,

I tried contacting Uwe Biegner in Germany years ago about getting a Kardex for a late 1958/early 1959 'A' RHD coupe w/chassis # 105460 (production date=Nov. 7, 1958) originally shipped directly to Lindsay Saker Motors in Johanesburg, So. Africa (no longer existing) for the 1st owner; However, he was unsuccessful as it wasn't alive(?) in listings! The 1st owner's son did respond several years ago and mentioned his father passed away and wondered if the car was still alive. I assured him it was and restored.

In 1985, the 2nd owner (a renowned doctor here in Cincinnati, OH) brought the car to the USA and I've been servicing it since early 1992 as he wasn't satisfied w/dealer service. Since he doesn't drive it much @ all, I have access to it anytime I wish for local and cross-country events when my Speedster isn't on the road, so I rotate the cars
and winning trophies in concours (the car was restored in 2005/2006 locally) as I rebuilt the engine after 118,000 miles. Original parts were OK; just bearings and gaskets.
It's still a Normal, but a "Runner" including Auto-Xs; All winnings were given to the owner.

Therefore, the following #s: Chassis 105460, engine 71836, transmission 22808, paint 5706 (Silver Metalic), interior Red leather, carpeting Light Tan. (German Square-weave)
Options: AM radio.
If possible, can you contact someone for a Kardex or a CoA' PCNA didn't respond, either.
I can verify a cost to the doctor for your help.

Sincerely,
Dick Weiss
