Oiler Cooler ID Help

#1 Post by David Green »

This came in a box of parts with my 1953 1500. Any idea who made it and what it's for?
Thanks,
David

Looks like it would be a spare oil cooler for your car. I would hazard a guess that it looks the right vintage.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I would not use it. Buy a new aluminum cooler, that way you get the best cooling and be assured it is clean inside. ………………...Jim.

Thanks guys. I'll put it away with the collection of original spare parts that will stay with the car and good to know that the engine re-builder did the right thing and used an aluminum oil cooler.

Looks like a standard VW oil cooler from the early 1950s. Probably a spare for your '53. Or it could be the original. This is what Porsche used in 1953.

Is that not early 356 cooler? Seems similar to the "curved dash real early" as described with photo from the Harry Pellow book (bottom left).
