Any idea what this is? Advertised as a 912?

That is not the ID number.
The number on the left is a factory internal # and the one on the right is the period model.
The engine ID is just below the generator stand(casting).

616 is the 1600 series and /39 is the iteration, I don't have my book with me so someone will chime in and identify it.
The 3rd piece covers do get swapped but usually, you will find 4 holes for engine support on the 912 engines on the cover.

That's a 912 engine, probably out of a '67 car. The internal (or assembly) number should be from around late summer or early fall of '67.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

I forgot to mention that all the numbers should be the same size to be correct.

My first message mentioned that the case bosses have been modified (metal removed) for a restamping--by a "turkey"!
Wonder what the rest of the case looks like--A 356 and not a 912?

According to the Maestro's Master Engine Data Base, If it has the matching third piece (timing cover) and the number has not been altered, the engine number would be around 1282000, correct for a 1968 model year 912.
