Iam rebuilding my #matching engine in a German delivery 64 SC with the NEW HEATER system documented 77 725 mileage we noticed a 912 style fan shroud with the rubber mount for the cooler upon disassembly. Once inside it did have a 912 style cooler the mount at the case has the recesses necessary for the mounting of the 912 cooler .
All three members of the engine case have a matching 3 digit number and the timing cover matches the cardex 616/16 is also on the right case half.
My question is if in fact this is a replacement case how does it have the correct three digit stamping , where replacement cases blank and re-stamped at the dealer ?
Or did euro SC with the new heater system have the 912 style case and cooler .
Any insight would be appreciated
Kind Regards to All , and Keep the Faith

Re: 912 oil cooler
Perhaps it's just been partially disassembled and upgraded with cooler and fan shroud?

Re: 912 oil cooler
Strange. I'm looking at both a 616/16 (356SC) and 616/36 (early 912) cases without the depressions for rubber gaskets above and below the cooler mount. And then I looked at one of my 616/40 (late 912) cases and it has the depressions.
Perhaps your engine was totally rebuilt and the mount was machined for the '68 cooler. I'd rather believe that then numbers fraud.

Re: 912 oil cooler
Cases were machined later for the 912 "soft-mount" cooler.

Thanks Chuck and Vic for your insight.
I don't believe there's any numbers fraud I believe the cases to be original or a" factory replacement" . I couldn't see how the underside of the mount was machined so professionally post factory , but that seems to be what happened.
Best regards
Bernard
