Morning, Me again with another question::
I looked at a car yesterday with an external oil cooler:
It had a plate with some fittings that went where the oil cooler was, then stainless hose routed:
straight back through the fan shroud, right turn to passenger side, down, forward behind rocker panel, around the front wheel
and the cooler is mounted to the fender bracket..
Now for my question, Is the oil pump OK with pushing oil that far.. Does it take away pressure to the bearings???
Thanks much,
Bill

Re: Oil Cooler
I had a 65 SC with that setup and it was fine. Not sure about an earlier small oil pump system.

Re: Oil Cooler
Doug is correct re:the 'big pump'.
But a lot depends on the hose sizes. -8 hoses that long are going to cause a lot of line losses. You really want -10.

Re: Oil Cooler
Mine has a cooler and spin-on filter conneccted that way. I believe i heard there are times when that oil is not filtered but I don’t know when that would happen.

The 'big-pump' engines have a 'priority-mains' feature in the oil circuitry. On start-up, the oil goes directly to the bearings and when they are pressurized, the oil flows to the back side of the 'priority-mains' valve, closing that circuit and routing the oil through the cooler. It's "circuit C" in the attached image:

Re: Oil Cooler
A full flow oil filter system is NOT advised if the engine has the small oil pump.
Oil hose ID should equal the oil inter-drillings (or a little larger).
