Re: Engine Year
Engine number 4095184 is a 912 (USA/Canada) (Type 616/40), part of range 4093001 to 4096921.
(w/ emission control)
This engine was originally fitted to a car as follows:
1969 (built 68/69) 912 coupe (Karmann) with a serial number between 129020001 and 129023483.
1969 (built 68/69) 912 coupe (Porsche) with a serial number between 129000001 and 129000428.

The VIN Database on the Registry website won't show this info but the full version will at www.356a.com

Re: Engine Year
Mark,
That is great information, thank you very much.
I like the idea of the engine being a 69, the year I was born.

Re: Engine Year
Glad to help. Is your 912 also 1969?

Re: Engine Year
Mark,
I have a 64 356C, which the engine is going into.
I never had a number matching engine, however I have placed the number in the engines wanted section.
Engine number: 713866
I know my chances of finding this are extremely slim, with this in mind I opted for a 912 engine.

Re: Engine Year
According to Harry Pellow's database, engine 4095045 had case halves that were cast in September of 1968. Engine 4095296 had case halves that were cast in November and December of 1968.
Slipping 4095184 between the two would indicate that it would have probably been assembled in the late fall or early winter of 1968. No way to know exactly when it was shipped unless you can obtain the Kardex of the original 912 in which it was installed.
Considering that the annual changeover occurred near Oktoberfest, it is probably a '69 model year engine that was built in '68.

Re: Engine Year
So it should be good inside, and it is beautifully plated and painted on the outside.

Re: Engine Year
on the case bosses just next to the fan shroud, under the oil filter there should be the build # and the 616/40 type #, what is the build #? I'm guessing it will be a little higher than 117870

Re: Engine Year
In Harry's database, Vic reported on build number 1285513 as having case halves that were cast in March and April of 1968. That was assembled only nine engines after yours, so it would be safe to say that your 912 engine was built in about the same time frame. The engine build (or assembly) numbers were put on the engines in strict numerical order, about the only numbers that were. The case halves though, could have been shuffled around a bit before the machine shop did the mating.
